Usual contraindications for breast lift

Many women notice that with the passing of time or after one or multiple pregnancies, the appearance of their breasts have changed. In many cases, this change is in the shape and consistency of the breasts and also their position on the chest wall. Breasts that used to be firm, hard and elevated on the chest wall can turn into breasts that don’t have a clear shape, look like empty bags with a wide base, hanging low on the chest wall. Instead of being firm and hard, the breasts can end up being too soft and saggy. We associated saggy breasts with older women in general, so when breast ptosis occurs in women of a younger age, the effects it can have on the emotional condition of the woman can be devastating. This is the reason why the breast lift is so in demand nowadays. The procedure allows for the remodeling of the breasts into perky, firm breasts once again. The procedure can be performed with or without implants and even with a breast reduction if the patient needs it. Depending on the anatomy and demands of the patient, the surgical plan will be developed. However, not all women with saggy breasts are good candidates for the breast lift.

The eligibility to undergo the breast lift will be assessed during the pre-operative consultation when the plastic surgeon will perform a physical examination on your body and also discuss your desires and expectations from the surgery. The procedure can’t and shouldn’t be performed on patients who have a contraindication to it.

Among the contraindications to the breast lift are severe heart, lung and blood conditions that would endanger the life of the patient during an elective surgery or trigger more complications. The procedure can’t be performed on patients who are pregnant or for patients who want to get pregnant in the future. The results of the breast lift can be altered if a new pregnancy occurs, especially in the first two years after the procedure.

While this is not a health contraindication, we should also be talking about understanding and accepting the risks and complications associated with the procedure. In other words, a strong contraindication for the procedure is any emotional or mental condition. Patients who don’t fully understand or can’t accept the full extent of the potential complications associated with the procedure are not good candidates, and a responsible plastic surgeon should refuse to perform the procedure on them.

It is important to discuss the contraindications for the breast lift in detail with the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation to make sure you are eligible to undergo the procedure. Patients with a preexisting health condition such as diabetes can still undergo the surgery; however, the plastic surgeon has to know about the condition to be able to take all precautionary measures to ensure the patient is safe during surgery.
