Tips to better tolerate scars after a breast lift

08 January 2019 / / Magazine

The hard and cold reality is that all women are affected by breast sagginess at one point or another. For some, it happens as soon as they reach full breast development while for others it won’t occur before they are in their 50s.

There are different and multiple causes of breast sagginess, and we don’t even know all of them at this point. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: the breasts lose their elevated position on the chest and they droop on the chest wall while looking empty and deflated. In severe cases, the nipple and areola complex is facing toward the ground, and this simple fact can considerably change the whole aesthetics of the breasts.

Sagginess is an unwanted occurrence and considered an imperfection of the breasts, and many women resort to plastic surgery to correct it. But plastic surgery comes with the price of scars. So how can we better tolerate and get used to the idea of having scars after breast lift?

Breast sagginess

If not affected by other factors, the natural aging process alone can cause breast sagginess. This means that the breasts lose contours, consistency, and the position on the thorax. You can tell if you are suffering from breast ptosis or not using a simple method. Just position yourself in front of a big mirror and take off your blouse and bra. Watch your breasts in the mirror from your profile. Notice where the inframammary fold line is. How is the breast positioned compared to the inframammary fold? If the most important part of the breast is positioned over the inframammary fold, then you can consider yourself happy as you display no signs of breast ptosis. However, if some or most of the mammary gland is positioned over the inframammary fold, then your breasts are sagging. The more considerable the amount of tissue under the fold, the more severe the breast ptosis. Another clear sign of breast ptosis is the nipple facing towards the ground instead of forward. When this happens, the chances are your sagginess is pretty severe and surgical treatment is required.

Why surgical treatment and not other “natural” methods such as massages, physical exercises, creams, and pills? Well, the answer is pretty obvious if we look a bit at the anatomy of the breasts. The breasts are made out of fat tissue, mammary gland, and skin. So what can sports do for you? It can tone up the pectoral muscle that the breasts lay on, but it will not affect the skin of the breasts. What can massages do? Make the skin smoother due to the use of special creams and oils. But massages can’t help the skin retract and the mammary gland to re-center in a more elevated position. If this would be possible, massages would probably be much more expensive than they already are. When it comes to sagginess, we are talking about an excess of tissue. In this case, the skin envelope of the breasts. When we are talking about an excess of skin, it is only a surgical excision that can correct this imperfection. In other words, there is no “natural” method to elevate your breasts, but you have a good, efficient and permanent solution, that is called the breast lift surgery.

Breast lift surgery results and scars

Now, we all know that surgical interventions require incisions to be performed, and incisions heal and turn into scars. In other words, there will be a certain level of scarring after any type of surgical intervention. The breast lift is no different.

Many patients are put off and postpone undergoing the procedure because they don’t like the idea of extensive scarring that is associated with the breast lift intervention. But they fail to understand one simple thing. The breast ptosis advances with time. This means that the longer you wait before undergoing the breast lift, the more severe your breast sagginess will be. And the more severe breast sagginess will be, it will require more or lengthier incisions. In other words, it is preferable to correct the sagginess the sooner the possible as chances are the scars will be smaller than having the procedure in 5 or 10 years’ time.

The scars left after the procedure are more significant if the breast sagginess is considerable. For example, for a minor or moderate sagginess, a simple peri-areolar incision might be enough to correct it. But for breasts that are falling low on the chest wall, up to three incisions might be needed to correct it.

Tips to better tolerate the scars after a breast lift

Before anything else, you need to understand that having perkier breasts is something you can show off in public, while scars are private. If you choose a good plastic surgeon, chances are they won’t be even visible when you wear a bathing suit.

Following the pre- and post-operative indications can help you avoid bad scarring and have scars that in one year’s time will be barely visible and looking like thin, fine lines close in color to the surrounding tissues.

If the scars are something you are worried about, think what would be more aesthetically displeasing for you: breasts that are falling down on the chest like empty bags or perky breasts with fine incision lines on them?

Conclusion

Scarring is an important part of any surgical intervention, but when it comes to plastic surgery, patients are even more concerned with the aspect and visibility of the scars. The breast lift surgery provides spectacular results and a complete rejuvenation of the aspect of the breasts, with the price of one and up to three scars left behind. To better tolerate the idea of getting scars after this procedure, consider the aesthetic improvement in your breasts and how the enhancement will weigh much more than some small lines that can be covered with clothes or lingerie.
