Male chest lift options
There is this misconception that plastic surgery is meant only for women. The fact is that men also suffer from self-esteem and body image issues when there are aesthetic flaws or shortcomings in their body. Like women, men can also experience the development of a saggy chest. When the male chest becomes saggy, it creates self-esteem issues. The male chest primarily becomes droopy because of weight gain, which in most cases is coupled with aging.
Men desire to have firmer, flatter, and masculine chest. But weight gain triggers the development of excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin in the chest. As a result, the chest becomes loose and hangs down. The male chest lift is a common procedure among men. There are two options to lift the male chest: liposuction only or liposuction and tissue and skin removal.
Liposuction as a male chest lift option
Even though liposuction is meant to remove stubborn fat pockets from localized areas of the body, it can also be used to lift the male chest. If the primary cause of your saggy chest is excess fat deposit, then you may qualify for liposuction. However, liposuction as a male chest lift option is valid only for patients who have good skin elasticity.
If your skin quality has excellent elasticity, then the surgeon may recommend liposuction to lift your chest. Unfortunately, men with severely saggy breast do not qualify for liposuction alone. They need more invasive approaches to remove the skin and glandular tissue that is making the chest appear loose.
Younger patients do qualify for liposuction of the chest because their skin is in excellent tone and has enough elasticity to roll back to its original position after the fat is removed. Liposuction of the male chest is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia. During the surgery, the plastic surgeon will make tiny incisions on the chest and then insert a hollow tube called a cannula inside the target area through the incisions. The cannula is given back and forth motion to dislodge the fat deposits. A suction pump or special syringe is used to remove the fat from the chest. The incisions are then sutured and closed.
The results will gradually evolve. Your chest will be swollen for many weeks after the procedure. As the swelling subsides, you will notice an improvement in your chest. Your chest will appear firmer and flatter, which will make you look more masculine. In case your chest becomes saggy as a result of the removal of the excess fat from the breast, you may consult with your surgeon again. In most such cases, doctors recommend patients to wait for about six to eight months. If the skin doesn’t retract, the surgeon may prescribe a new surgery to remove the excess skin from your chest.
But the good news is that majority of younger patients with good skin quality do not require skin removal from the chest because the skin naturally retracts after liposuction. The recovery period is essential regarding achieving the desired outcomes more safely and effectively. Be sure to follow the surgeon’s instructions for a safer and smooth recovery.
Skin and tissue removal
If you are older and your chest has become droopy, liposuction alone may not treat the condition because older people often have inelastic skin. In such a case, the plastic surgeon may recommend a more invasive chest lift option that involves skin and tissue removal from the chest. This approach is best for patients who have a severely saggy chest. During this procedure, the plastic surgeon will make incisions around the areola or vertical incisions.
There is no doubt that this procedure is more effective and delivers better and reliable results than liposuction of the chest alone. If you have experienced massive weight gain followed by weight loss, chances are your chest may have become loose. If the condition is affecting your self-esteem, you should get the male chest lift.
During the pre-operative consultation, the plastic surgeon will examine your chest and determine how much skin and tissue needs to be removed. If a moderate amount of skin removal is required, the surgeon will recommend you a circular periareolar incision. With this incision option, you will get a scar only around your areola. The scar will fade and become less visible over time. Furthermore, the dark skin of the areola will perfectly camouflage the scar.
On the other hand, if the chest is sagging and the excess skin is huge, it can necessitate the use of a vertical incision in addition to the periareolar incision. When these incisions are used, you will get a scar that imitates the shape of a lollipop on your chest. The scar will fade as time passes and will be hidden in the nearby skin.
If the condition of chest sagging is extreme, it will require an incision that extends externally along the inframammary fold. With this incision technique, the surgeon will be able to remove more skin, fat, and tissue from the chest. This incision technique is referred to as a circumvertical incision.
This invasive option of male chest lift is performed under general anesthesia because it is more traumatic and painful. After the anesthesia has been administered, the patient will go to sleep and will not feel any pain or make any movements.
The surgeon will then make the pre-decided incision on the chest and remove any excess skin and fat from the chest. If the glandular tissue has overdeveloped and is making the chest look saggy, the plastic surgeon will remove that as well. In the last step, the surgeon will suture and close the incision.
The goal of the surgeon is to give your chest a more contoured and masculine appearance with a fully defined hollow at the highpoint. Moreover, edges of the pectoral area at the front and the dorsi at the rear has to be adequately defined so that it gives a V shape to the upper region of your body. In other words, the surgeon will not only remove the excess skin and tissue but make sure you get a V shape and masculine chest.
The good news is that the male chest lift has an excellent record of delivering effective, sustainable, and reliable outcomes. The primary recovery following the operation can take two weeks, but complete recovery will take about six weeks. The results of the operation will not immediately be noticeable. As your body heals and the swelling disappears, you will see the results. Your chest will appear flat, toned, and firmer, which will in turn make you look more masculine. As a result of these improvements, your self-esteem will also get a boost, and your quality of life will improve.
Candidacy for the surgery
The male chest lift is a major plastic surgery procedure. As such, you need to meet specific eligibility requirements to undergo surgery. A good candidate for the operation is one who has good health and has realistic expectations from the surgery. Furthermore, if you want to get just liposuction, your skin must be elastic enough to retract.
Your candidacy for the male chest lift will be assessed during the pre-operative consultation. The plastic surgeon will examine your chest and determine the cause of the condition. He will also discuss the risks of the surgery with you and then help you do a risk/benefit analysis. The surgeon will also ask you how the condition is affecting your self-esteem and quality of life. You should undergo the procedure only when the risks are lower than the expected benefits and only when your saggy chest is affecting your self-esteem.
Given the fact that the male chest lift is an invasive procedure, there are risks associated with the procedure. The common risks include infection, excessive bleeding, poor wound healing, abnormal scarring, anesthesia complications, blood clotting, and seroma and hematoma. The severity of these risks depends on your health. Specific health problems like a poor immune system, diabetes, smoking, and poor skin quality may increase these risks. To reduce these risks, you must share your complete medical information with the surgeon and follow the surgeon’s instructions for your recovery.
Like females, males are also sensitive about their physical appearance. One of the common problems that many men suffer from is the development of a saggy chest. When the chest becomes saggy, it affects the masculinity and self-esteem of men. It also makes their body outline look aesthetically unwelcoming. To get back their masculine appearance and restore their higher self-esteem, many patients seek treatment for the condition.
In this article, we have discussed the causes of male chest sagging and the treatment options. I have also discussed the risks, results, and recovery of the male chest lift. If your chest is saggy and the condition is affecting your quality of life, you may consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to treat the condition.
