Even though breast asymmetry is a very common problem, it can lead to emotional and self-esteem problems for many women. The condition can decrease self-confidence and keeps women from properly fitting into their clothes. There are also many who feel insecure during times of intimacies. In extreme cases, unevenness of the breasts can seriously affect the overall aesthetics of the patient.
The good news is that there are a number of plastic surgery procedures to fix breast asymmetries of different magnitudes. One such procedure is the breast lift surgery. The procedure makes the patients feel confident and secure in their physical appearance.
It is worth noting here that breasts can be of different types. For example, one woman many have differently sized breasts, while another may suffer from differently shaped breasts. Another patient may have breasts that point in different directions. No matter what type of breast asymmetry you might have, you will experience emotional pain if you are very image-conscious. The breast lift surgery can be used to treat certain types and magnitudes of breast asymmetries.
Fixing breast asymmetry through breast lift
One of the major causes of breast asymmetry is the occurrence of sagginess in the breasts. If your plastic surgeon determines that your breasts have become uneven due to saggy skin, you may be required to undergo a breast lift surgery to correct the asymmetry.
During the surgery, your plastic surgeon will place an incision around the areola and from the areola’s base to the fold of the breast. The excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue will then be removed. Your breasts will be raised to an elevated, balanced position and the incisions will be closed and sutured. Your breasts will appear symmetrical, perky, and youthful after the procedure.
Having an idea about your ideal breast shape, direction, and size and communicating your aesthetic goals to the plastic surgeon are the key aspects of achieving better results with breast lift surgery. Be sure to work closely with your plastic surgeon to make this critical decision. For example, if one of your breasts has become saggy and your nipples are pointing downwards, you should be able to tell your surgeon whether you want only the saggy breast to be lifted to the level of the other breast or want both breasts to be elevated to a completely different level.
In many cases, better results are achieved when both breasts are treated with a breast lift. In some cases, it becomes inevitable to use other procedures in combination with the breast lift. For example, depending on your aesthetic problems and goals, your surgeon may recommend a combo of breast lift and implants. Moreover, if one of your breasts is relatively smaller than the other, your doctor may suggest using a combo of breast reduction and lift to correct the condition.
Breast lift surgery to correct breast asymmetry will take about 2-3 hours. The operation is performed under general anesthesia, and you may be required to spend a night in the hospital or surgical facility.
The procedure starts with the placement of three incisions on your breast that needs correction. If both breasts are asymmetrical, the breast lift will be performed on both of them. In the second step, the excess skin is removed and the nipple and areola are raised to an elevated position where they can achieve balance. After the surgeon is certain that symmetry has been achieved, the incisions are closed and sutured.
After the procedure, you will experience swelling and pain in your breast. The pain will be easily managed with pain relief medications. The swelling will gradually subside over the next few weeks or months. The results of the procedure will not be fully visible until the swelling and bruising have subsided and your breasts have fully healed. You will also get scars on your breasts that will gradually fade over time.
Combining breast lift with implants to treat breast asymmetry
If one of your breasts is saggy and smaller than the other, a breast lift alone may not help correct the asymmetry. In order to address both the sagginess and smaller size of your breast, your plastic surgeon may recommend a combination of breast lift and implant surgery.
The implant will increase the size of the asymmetrical breast, whereas the lift will remove the sagginess and raise your nipple and areola to a better aesthetic position. Combined, both procedures will make your breasts symmetrical. In some cases, both breasts may need treatment. Your doctor may recommend placing an implant in the symmetrical breast as well if s/he believes the use of implants in both breasts will help achieve symmetry.
There are many patients who want to use only implants to fix their breast asymmetries. This often fails to deliver the desired results because implants alone are not enough to treat breast unevenness resulting from loose, drooping skin. At times, it will be inevitable to use implants along with the lift. You should listen to and follow the recommendations of your plastic surgeon to achieve better aesthetic results.
If your breasts are differently sized, your surgeon will recommend using implants of different sizes to fix the condition. Since one of your breasts is larger than the other, your surgeon may also recommend using a lift on the larger breast to achieve a balance between the breasts and make both breasts appear firmer.
Breast asymmetry is a common aesthetic problem in women. If your breasts are differently sized or if one or both of your breasts has become saggy, your plastic surgeon may tell you to undergo the breast lift procedure. In most cases, implant surgery will be performed along with a breast lift. Breast lift surgery involves the removal of excess skin from the larger and/or saggy breast to treat the aesthetic problem, so balance is achieved between your breasts.
