Are my breasts sagging?

25 September 2018 / / Breast lift

After multiple pregnancies or simple weight loss and gain, women might notice their breasts are not as perkier as before. Other different factors can cause breast sagginess such as genetics, naturally big breasts, and even the natural aging process. This means that all women are affected by breast ptosis sooner or later in their lives. But how can you tell if you have breast sagginess or not?

Self-diagnosis of breast sagginess

Breast sagginess affects breasts of all sizes, even if larger breasts tend to be impacted by it sooner than smaller breasts. However, it is quite simple for a woman to be able to self-diagnose a potential breast ptosis, just by looking at her breasts in the mirror. Are your nipples facing downwards? Is a large part of the mammary gland localized under the level of the inframammary fold? If you would put a pencil in the inframammary fold, would your breasts be able to support it without letting it fall? If the answer is yes to one or all these questions, chances are you are suffering from breast sagginess. However, it is important to see a plastic surgeon who will be able to perform exact measurements to see the level of ptosis and to recommend an optimal treatment plan.

What to do about breast sagginess

I have patients coming to my clinic looking for a breast lift surgery after they have tried other different methods to elevate their breasts. Some tried massages for some time and noticed no improvement. Others were told that special physical exercises would improve the appearance of their breasts. Others were recommended to lose weight, while some of them tried to put on some weight in the hope of getting perkier breasts. The truth is that it is only plastic surgery that is effective in treating breast ptosis. No diet, physical exercise, massage, cream or pill will give you a lifting effect because nothing can work on the loose ligaments of the breasts. But why is the breast lift surgery different and how does it work?

Details about mastopexy

This cosmetic plastic surgery intervention is usually recommended when there is a level of breast sagginess, generally after significant weight loss, one or multiple pregnancies, or because the ptosis has accentuated with age. The breast lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can take up to a few hours, depending on the complexity of the case.

During the pre-operative consultation, the plastic surgeon will ask questions regarding your medical history, current illnesses, and medication to rule out any potential contraindications for the procedure. The breasts will be examined and the ptosis diagnosed. In some cases, the plastic surgeon might suggest getting implants to restore the volume of the breasts or fat transfer for the same purpose. Once all the methods are discussed in terms of advantages, disadvantages, and the recommendation for the particular case, the plastic surgeon will describe the surgical technique to be used.

Mastopexy can entail up to three incisions if the level of ptosis is severe. One incision goes around the areola and is used to reposition the nipple and areola complex, one goes from the areola towards the inframammary fold, and another one is placed in the inframammary fold. If the level of breast ptosis is minor, a periareolar incision can be enough to correct the sagginess. Again, this can be decided only after a proper examination.

The plastic surgeon will also specify the course of the procedure, what medical exams need to be done before the intervention is performed, and precautions to be taken before and after the surgery. The patient will be informed of the consequences of the procedure, the risks entailed by the anesthesia, and the surgery itself.

Before scheduling your procedure, you should know that you need to take some time off from work for the recovery period. The recovery period after this type of intervention can vary from a few days to two weeks depending on the extent of the surgery and the type of surgical methods used. For people who practice sports, it is important to know that it can be up to a month or two before being allowed to resume intense physical exercises after the breast lifting procedure. The post-operative recommendations include wearing a supportive bra for at least six to eight weeks. This can be a simple sports bra, as long as it provides the necessary support for the breasts.

The results after the procedure are not visible immediately as it takes time for the swelling and bruising to subside. The patient will be required to have follow-up consultations with the plastic surgeon up to six times during the first year post-op. The final results can be assessed when the scars have fully healed and matured, and this can take nine months to one year.

This intervention usually has a high level of patient satisfaction. However, if you are not happy with the results achieved, you can schedule a revision surgery, but no sooner than a year after the initial procedure was performed.

Conclusion

Breast sagginess is a common issue that affects a vast majority of women, even from an early age. For naturally big breasts, the sagginess can occur as soon as in the teenage years, making it difficult for the patient to be happy with her breast appearance.

When looking for effective treatment for breast sagginess, it is important to know that the condition can only be cured with the help of plastic surgery. There is no amount of physical exercises or massages that can restore the aspect of your breasts due to the consistency of the breast tissues and the causes of the problem.

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is commonly performed nowadays to improve the appearance of the breasts and make them perky again. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and other surgical techniques can be associated to achieve a superior result such as a breast reduction, breast augmentation with implants, or fat transfer to the breasts.
