Undergoing surgical interventions is one of the ways seen to be helpful in removing the insecurities of people in terms of body appearance. Though body enhancement procedures are known worldwide, there are still few people who fear these interventions. There are several reasons why they are afraid of undergoing surgeries. Aside from scarring is inevitable, they believe that complications can occur.
Keep in mind that complications will really happen if the surgeon’s instructions will not be strictly followed. In breast augmentation procedure, some people believe that it is possible for the patient to get cancer since placing an implant is part of the surgery. This is not true because breast augmentation has been popular not just because it can improve the appearance of the breasts but it is also proven to be a safe procedure.
However, when it comes to cancer detection, there are certain things that we need to consider. If we look at the literature, a breast implant can obscure the view of the breast tissue in a mammogram, theoretically increasing the death rate from breast cancer due to late detection of cancer. Breast implants can be placed either below the muscle or above the muscle; the literature suggests that if the implant is placed below the muscle, mammograms are much easier and it does not prevent early detection of breast cancer because the implant is not obscuring the breast tissue itself. The same thing cannot be said about implants placed above the muscle, where there can be issues with routine mammograms and the early detection of breast cancer.
Nevertheless, there are actually no studies suggesting that implants decrease the survival rate of patients who develop breast cancer after breast augmentation surgery. The X-rays used in mammograms cannot go through silicone or saline implants well enough to show the breast tissue under them. This means that the part of the breast tissue covered by the implant won’t be seen on the mammogram.
