ANATOMICAL BREAST IMPLANTS VS. ROUND BREAST IMPLANTS

ANATOMICAL BREAST IMPLANTS VS. ROUND BREAST IMPLANTS

Before selecting a breast implant, you should understand the differences between each type of implant. This is because the outcome of the breast augmentation procedure doesn’t just depend on your physical and emotional condition, but also on the size and type of the implant. Some women think that the bigger the implant, the better it will look. However, oversized breast implants can actually lead to more issues and create an imbalance between your breast size and overall figure. Proportion is key.

For this reason, you should find a capable surgeon who can help you choose the most suitable breast implant for your body. This includes deciding the implant type, either the saline solution implant or silicone implant.

So how do we decide? We need to evaluate the pros and cons and compare it to our body type. Let’s start with the saline breast implants.

Saline Solution Breast Implants

Breast enhancement with saline solution implants was once deemed to be the leading procedure in improving and enlarging the breasts. One of the great things about this implant is that if it ruptures, the saline solution will be naturally consumed and excreted by the body without any complications. Also, it requires smaller incisions because the implants are empty when inserted into the breasts. This allows the surgeon to easily adjust the size accordingly.

However, saline solution implants don’t offer impressive aesthetic outcomes because they don’t appear and feel natural. Also, the volume of the breasts is limited because there is a high chance for the implants to ripple if there is too much saline. Many surgeons acknowledge that the results of saline implants are less aesthetically pleasing than the silicone implants.

Breast Implants Filled With Silicone Gel

The use of silicone implants for breast augmentation is considered a modern approach. Due to its impressive results, it has become a sought out and popular procedure. A silicone implant is made out of an elastic silicone shell with different external textures. What makes this implant different from saline implants is that the shell comes pre-filled with solid silicone gel. This drastically reduces the risk of leakage or rippling. Furthermore, silicone breast implants look and feel natural. When you touch a breast enhanced with silicone implant, you won’t even notice the implant because it feels the same as the natural mammary gland.

Listed below are the two major categories of silicone implants based on their shape:

  1. Anatomical Silicone Implants

This type of silicone implant is mostly used in cases where the goal is to fix breast sagging because it can lift the breast and restore volume. It can also be used if the patient’s priority is to have natural breast characteristics. These implants offers a tailor-made solution, wherein the surgeon can strategically position the volume where desired. The anatomical implant offers a flatter upper breast pole and a fuller lower breast curve, which in turn leads to youthful natural-looking breasts.

Having said that, you will need to meet certain requirements. The surgeon will examine your skin quality, the mammary gland, and thorax circumference. The height and weight of the patient will also be assessed. Once done, the surgeon will use the data to recommend the most suitable anatomical breast implant for the patient. Make sure to consider your surgeon’s advice and expert opinion when making the final decision.

  1. The Round Silicone Mammary Implant

On the other hand, if your goal is to achieve aesthetically appealing and extra noticeable breasts, the round silicone implants are the right choice for you. While it resembles the anatomical implant in touch and steadiness, it comes with the additional benefit of an ideal circumference. It produces a rounded appearance and fills up the upper portion of your cleavage.

Round implants have been in used since 1963. They come in a range of sizes and outlines. The volume can be between 90cc and 800cc, while the projection ranges from 2 cm to 6 cm. Since there are many choices to consider, you should select your implant carefully with your plastic surgeon’s input. Your plastic surgeon will examine your current anatomy and consider your aesthetic goals and preferences before recommending you a specific type of round breast implant.

An eight-year-long study presented during the congress of International Committee for Quality Assurance and Medical Technologies and Devices in Plastic Surgery and the International Confederation for Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery in 2014 made the following revelations:

  1. The sub-muscular implant placement has been the most used approach for breast augmentation via implants.
  • In 86% of the cases, the anatomical silicone breast implants were positioned underneath the breast muscle, whereas the rest were done through sub-glandular placements .
  • In 66% of the surgeries, the round implants were placed underneath the breast muscle, while 34% of the cases were placed above the breast muscle.
  1. The most common incision type is the infra-mammary incision.
  • 60% of the cases involved infra-mammary incisions, wherein the surgeon used them for the round implant placement. In 23% of the cases, the periareolar incision was used. As for the rest of the 16%, the surgeons used the transaxial incision.
  • In 92 percent of the cases of anatomical implants, the surgeon used infra-mammary incisions. The periareolar incision was used in 6% of the cases. while On the other hand the transaxial incision was not used at all.
  1. Capsular contracture was found to be more common in cases of round implants.
  • 11% of the time round implants experienced capsular contracture.
  • While in the case of anatomical implants, the capsular contracture occurred only 3%.
  1. Implant ruptures were found to be more common in patients with round implants. This observation was made in the span of 8 years.
  • 10% of the round implant patients experienced implant rupture.
  • Only 3%of the anatomical implant patients experienced implant rupture.

Conclusion

Deciding your implants should not be taken lightly. You need to make a judicious decision by asking your plastic surgeon for their expert opinion and recommendation. Do not choose the implant based on what you heard from other people’s experience. Remember, there is never a guarantee that you will achieve the same results as your friend. The implants must be selected based on your aesthetic goals and expectations, existing anatomy, incision type and implant placement.
